we went to a show at
the national theater on saturday. it was my first time to see a production there and i really enjoyed it! even though the theater is undergoing some construction right now, it's still a simply stunning building.
the show was put on by a drama and dance group called
han tang yue fu. it was a six-scene drama called "the feast of han xizai," and it depicted a legendary story from the tang dynasty, based on the painting of the same name. (you can see the painting below.) han xizai was supposedly a high-ranking official in the tang dynasty who gave up his life of luxury to become a wandering musician, in protest of his generation's low morality and political chaos.

i must admit, i was a little misled by the advertisements, which had me expecting a little more dancing and cool costume sleeve action like zhang zi yi in house of flying daggers,

but, all in all the show was great and beautifully done, and i really enjoyed all the traditional chinese music. and, we got to meet one of the performers afterwards. :)
